Refurbishment of the drinking water network (Vlore)
A.Hak International B.V. has refurbished the drinking water network of the city of Vlore for the Albanian Ministry of Transport and Public Works. This involved replacing the existing antiquated system, which no longer met today's needs. Albanian subcontractors did the physical work. A.Hak International B.V. was responsible for the detailed engineering, procurement of materials and coordination of the various subcontractors.
The project involved:
- Building a new pumping station
- Refurbishing two existing pumping stations
- Building two new reservoirs with capacities of 600 and 6,000 cubic metres respectively
- Laying 4 kilometres of HDPE plastic pipelines from the pumping stations to the reservoirs
- Approximately 59 kilometres of pipework for the water supply to and in the city
The pipelines from the pumping stations to the reservoirs are 300 m, 900 m and 2,000 m long with diameters of 500 mm, 800 mm and 1,000 mm respectively. The supply network to and in the city has a total length of 56 kilometres, ranging from 630 mm to 160 mm in diameter.
The project involved 21,000 m³ of ground work, 1,692,000 kg of reinforcing steel, 9,500 m² of formwork and 2,650 m³ of concrete for the construction of the pumping stations and reservoirs.
Laying of two oil pipelines (Patos-Marinza)
For the Patos-Marinza section A.A.Hak International B.V. is laying two pipelines of 12" and 6" respectively over a length of 10 kilometres. The client is the Canadian oil company Bankers Petroleum Albania Ltd, which operates an oil field in Albania. The pipelines will transport the oil from the Marinza field to the terminal in Fier, whence it is taken by road to the port of Vlore. There are plans to extend the pipeline to Vlore over a 35-kilometre section in a southerly direction.
A special feature of the project is the fact that the 12" pipeline is insulated with Logstore, giving it an external diameter of 450 mm. A.Hak has years of experience of laying this kind of piping systems, in particular for district heating. Experienced staff of A.Hak are supervising the local contractor's staff.
The section also has a number obstacles to contend with, including rivers, roads and a railway line, which are to be crossed using HDD and impact ramming. This involves five drillings with a total length of 750 m.
